Position Title: Mental Health Therapist for Children with Problematic Sexual Behaviors

Primary Description: 

Provides assessment and trauma-focused treatment services to children served by Sunflower House. Coordinates a new evidence-based model for children with problematic sexual behaviors as a result of abuse or trauma. (Training in the model will be provided.) Provides therapy for children and support groups for their caregivers.

This position is with Wyandot Behavioral Health Services at their PACES South location in partnership with Sunflower House in Shawnee, Kansas.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Receives referrals from Sunflower House family advocates for children seen at Sunflower House that may need therapy and counseling, and from referring agencies for youth exhibiting problematic sexual behaviors.
  • Assesses appropriateness for treatment and formulates treatment plans.
  • Provides trauma-informed mental health therapy services to children and adolescents, such as evidence-based Problematic Sexual Behavior Cognitive Behavior Therapy (PSB-CBT), Trauma Focused-Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), Cognitive Behavioral Intervention for Trauma in Schools (CBITS), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Trauma-Informed Care, or play therapy.
  • Conducts a variety of treatment approaches, including individual, family and group therapy.
  • Co-facilitates psycho-educational family support groups to non-offending caregivers to understand the dynamics of victimization, and provides support and guidance to address their child’s needs.
  • Prepares timely, thorough and accurate case notes and of individual, family or group sessions. Maintains appropriate records for reporting, evaluation, and clinical purposes. Prepares reports as necessary.
  • Attends clinical supervision with PACES Clinical Supervisor.

Basic Requirements: 

Master’s level professional licensed in the state of Kansas, in good standing with the licensing agency. Three years or more of direct work experience with abused children and their families. This position requires being comfortable working with children and their families who have experienced trauma, including physical and sexual abuse, and who exhibit problematic sexual behaviors. Previous experience as a mental health therapist doing trauma treatment with children: EMDR, TF-CBT, and/opr Play Therapy is preferred. Familiarity with diagnostic and treatment planning approaches, mental health theory and practice, and ethical considerations in the mental health field. Knowledgeable of dynamics of child abuse; ability to engage children of all ages; and empower and mediate with parents in crisis. Must work effectively with individuals from various economic, social and cultural backgrounds. Successful candidates will demonstrate an ability to accomplish and advance program goals, a willingness to remain abreast of current research related to child abuse/neglect, and an ability to remain sensitive and demonstrate appropriate boundaries with program clients, agency staff and volunteers. Must be able to work flexible hours, including evenings and as needed after hours coverage. Clearance through Kansas and Missouri Child Abuse Registries and national criminal background check. Must be willing to safely perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodations. EOE.
